The feminist film theory is anchored on feminist politics and feminist theory. Many approaches are employed by feminists to examine films, their elements and theoretical underpinnings. The second wave of feminism and development of women's studies in educational institutions are being regarded as key to the development of feminist film theory. In the 1970s, feminist scholars in the United States examined on the function of female characters in genres as a reflection of how society views women. Examples of this are the works of Marjorie Rosen and Molly Haskell. Their critiques examined the portrayal of women in relation to the broader historical context, stereotypes, whether women were active or passive and the screen time allotted to female characters. In recent times, feminist scholars have included in their analysis the depiction of women in digital media and television.
